Project: A sense of Home

For six years now Somalia has topped the list of so-called 'failed states'. This is due to the constant corruption, armed violence, terrorism and lack of human rights. As a consequence; many Somalis have been forced to leave the country, arriving in Europe as refugees. A number of them are currently living in a disused multi-storey car park in the ‘Bijlmer’ in Amsterdam; It is a building without any facilities, unfit for people to live in. Even though there are various nationalities living there, the predominance of Somalis is striking. Upon arrival in the Netherlands they all applied for asylum, their requests were mostly denied.

Thesis: From the outside to the inside

In my thesis I research the balance between form and content in documentary photography. Within this research, I look at the role of aesthetics, what is the function of aesthetics in a picture? The choice of this problem stems from my own work. The question that was central in the thesis is as follows: the form and content come together to form a strong working whole and when does it get out of balance? I put this research opposing the concepts and describe them individually. Also, I 'm occupied with context and interpretation of images. Within these chapters, I discuss various photographers. I discuss the work of Eva Leitolf and how the texts affects her pictures and I look at the work of Richard Mosse and research what the aesthetics means in his photographs. The research question in my thesis is urgent and will remain important for the further development of my work.
