Project: Back to My Roots
I have always been fascinated with portraiture art, which reflects both in my past and recent work. The constant layering of the face produces a transformational aspect in my paintings. This working process becomes a journey to discover my true self-identity and creates my ultimate personal story.
Thesis: Selected philosophical theories of the face to reflect on the portraiture work of Marlene Dumas, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud
Portraiture art can be seen as the recording of an individual's appearance and personality, whether in a painting, photograph or other medium. The work often contains two statements, one by the portrait artist about perception and another by the portrait topic on his or her place in the world. A central role is the facial expression of the subject in the portraiture works. My thesis research paper will thus focus on the philosophical elements of Jung's analysis on persona and shadow, Deleuze and Guattari's a view on the face, and Roth's theories on perception and representation. These philosophical theories have then been compared and applied to the portraiture work of Marlene Dumas, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.
